How To Sell SEO and Business Services Using Linked In

How to Sell SEO Services Using Linked In.

In the continuing series of how to sell SEO services, and based on our premise that relationships are what really sell, I wanted to give you a great tool and process to sell more SEO services (or any business service for that matter).

Linked In is the world’s largest business social network. Chances are the vast majority of your clients have a Linked In profile. On that profile is a list of their connections.  Doesn’t it make sense to take a look at all of your clients connections, making a note of the industry and position each connected person is in, and then ask your client for an introduction?

Step One

The first step is to request to be added to each of your clients linked in account.  All you need to do is search Linked In for their names, and then request they add you as a connection.

We encourage our sales coaching clients and any businesses that sell b2b, to actively, and prolifically ask for referrals from clients.  The big challenge most of your clients/customers will have giving you a referral (and I find this true time after time) is trying to figure out who to refer you to.  The process of knowing who their connections are on Linked In, and asking directly for a referral to that very person, will increase your referrals a ton.

Social-network

Give it a few weeks if needed

You may need to give it a few weeks before many of your clients respond to your request to be connected, as they may not check their account all that often.  For those you don’t hear back from, send them an email and ask that they add you to their Linked In connections.

Search their connections

Now that you are connected… go search those clients’ connections!  Make a note of the people you think will benefit from your service, and then …   write a template email that you can give to your client that recommends a business speak to you about your service.

Send a request for an introduction

Send your client a request for a referral to the identified prospect, and add the email template to the bottom of your email.   End your email with something like….

Mike, I wanted to make this as easy as possible for you so I have included a brief introduction of my company for_____________ (Name of prospect) below. Please feel free to just copy and paste it into an email to _______.

You have now eliminated almost all the reasons you don’t get referrals from Clients.  You have identified the person(s) they can refer, you have written the copy they need to send.  You will be surprised how many of your clients will happily refer you to non competing businesses.

Facebook Shares and SEO

Your business Facebook page has the potential to add great visibility to your web site.  If your comments and link is shared on another Facebook page it can be one of the better links you will have in your profile.  Here is my SEOmoz and PR rank on my little business Facebook page:

The page has a P.R. of 2 from Google, and a PA of 48.  These are all natural ratings.  When I share a comment from someone…  and there is a link in that comment, it shows as a follow link.

So there you have it. Get your face book comments shared and nothing but good things can come from it!  If you want to understand how to promote your facebook page and use comments in the right way with the right content to get shares feel free to contact me.

Local Search Ranking Results and Factors 2012

If you run reports for Local search engine rankings you may be in for a big surprise.

For every keyword you are looking at you need to run four different queries, because Google will serve the results in three different ways with different results for each. Local searches may use one of the following type searches. Let’s use Basement Finishing as an example.

1.)  Just the term Basement Finishing

This will bring up results Google thinks are relevant to what location you are searching from. I assume they use the IP from your Internet provider, which may or may not be in the actual town/city/zip you are sitting in as you search. This result (and I will add pictures later) will have the strongest organic listings for the major metro area you are (of you are ) part of.  Followed by the Maps listings.(Generally)

2.) You may search with your city name in the query, like “basement Finishing Broomfield”

This brings up the Maps first.  A big difference than a search with no city.

3.) You may use the zip code, like “basement Finishing 80020”

This brings up different organic results in the first two positions than the non city term search and then the maps.

4.) You may just use the generic metro city name, like “Basement Finishing Denver”.

Completely different results from all of the above.

Four commonly used search structures for local, one keyword. This is one reason that using a non local SEO for a local business can be a mistake. Few understand, or work on the entire set of query types, and may be sending you reports with just one type query, when you are missing 75%  of the opportunities.

Here is a quick copy of examples:

How To Link Build for SEO

How to Link build, and a List of Links for SEO.

Learn How To Become A Great Link Builder

Over the next few months you are going to learn how to become a great builder of back links, and we are going to not only teach you how we do it, but provide you with weekly opportunities we have found to help you see that our system of acquiring web visibility is white hat and powerful.

So how many times has a business owner  or anyone searched for, or wished for, a simple list of links that they can use to add their site url and magically watch their web site rankings move up in the organic search results?

225,000  searches

Google Chrome
Google Chrome (Photo credit: thms.nl)

According to my Google Ad Words Keyword tool, that term is searched about 22,000 times a month in the United States.  “How to link build” is around 65,000, add the associated terms and you are well above 225,000 searches a month.  For those of us in the Internet Marketing world, that doesn’t sound like a huge amount, but when you consider that a quarter of a million searches are completed looking for either a list of SEO links, or how to build back links, that’s a bunch of interest.

Get a couple Links a week

Image via Wikipedia

I want to start giving a couple of good linking opportunities a week here. That should help some of you who are in the do it yourself mode, and also provide some additional evidence, through your feedback, that these sites actually send traffic to your web site. Other local SEO’s may find this helpful as augmenting their SEO work for local clients.

But first I want you to understand our philosophy on search engine visibility. You should only take an action that you would take if Google and the rest of the search engines didn’t exist. Why? Because if you are adding your site to a directory, or commenting on  a blog, or buying URL’s and building mini sites, or writing a bunch of different blogs, or book marking your site on social book marking web sites, for the sole purpose of increasing your rankings, you are heading for big trouble.  That’s the stuff Google and Bing don’t like, and are continuing to develop tactics to identify these questionable links, and downgrade or penalize the sites. When they do that, your site loses trust, and can fall off the rankings chart.  Why work hard on a tactic that is eventually going to fail?

Not only will we be providing a few great sites you can add your site to, but, we also want to teach you how to find good opportunities to build your web visibility.

How do you get the link information, just subscribe to our news letter, and we will send you out the information weekly. Sign up here http://visitor.r20.constantcontact.com/d.jsp?llr=kgftjqcab&p=oi&m=1102206047434

The Biggest Sales Mistake We All Make

The biggest mistake almost every company makes in sales:

Sales is giving people or businesses what they want, and the process to do so. Sales is not about giving them what they need.

  • Ask your self what your prospects want.
  • Ask your self what they need.

Do they match?  If so then you need to start again.

After you have this right, expand what they want into what that looks like, feels like, and the results. Now you are ready to sell.

Here’s an example:
Your  prospect is a mid forties man with a family of 4.
When he is shopping for a car…  what does he  need?
Transportation, with enough room for 5 people, and a trunk large enough to fit  some golf clubs.  A safe car. A good priceUsed Cars

But what does he want?

  • A car that will make him look like a pro athlete
  • A car that my friends will say, hey, that’s cool!
  • A car that says who I am (or want to be)
  • A car that other people want to drive
    • A car that the opposite sex will want to sit in
    • A car that says I am successful
    • A car that does things other cars can not
    • A car that makes him feel young
    • A fast car
    • A car that shouts I am successful.
  • Maserati GranTurismo
  • A great deal  ( Not price)

So if you are selling this car,

Do you say. Our expo model will get you from point A to B safely and fit all of your friends and family!

Or:

I’ve never experienced anything like this. It’s like the love I had for my first car combined with driving a Maserati.  My wife won’t let me drive it by myself, because it’s so sexy. And they made it easy to drive away in. Drive, sign and go.

….  like reliving your first automobile love affair, but better…  The expo doesn’t ever need a tune up.

Or, if you are a home remodeling company you can say… We are licensed and Insured, and give free estimates.  But maybe you could communicate what they want.

At abc remodeling we create magical places where your family can create warm memories. Your home is the heart and soul of your life, and we build spaces with that in mind.

Give your prospects what they want.  What they need comes with it.

Google Local Search in Denver

The different types of Local Search

There are three different type search query types that a company needs to be aware of when it comes to local search. Those being, a search with a large city, that represents the entire metro area in the search term, a search with a logical suburb in the search, and a search with no local intent (city, zip,).

Let’s say I’m looking for a house painter for my Mom who lives about 25 miles south of my location. Her home is located in a small sub division by the name of Bowmar.  I live in a small city called Lafayette, and both are part of the Denver metro area. What are the most likely methods I will use to search?

First I am going to use the (what I call Facet city) Denver.  Denver in my mind is generic, and should bring up the best of the entire metro area?

As you can see I get the PPC ads, and then the top few companies that are large established Denver painting companies. Now, because we did the optimization for both, I know more about them then a stranger would. But either will service my Mom’s home, and both are good painters.

Note that the top two results are NOT Google places or maps listings. They are organic. Also note that Vivax shows up both as the top organic listing and as number 2 in maps.

Or:

I could use the larger suburb her home is in (Littleton).  So house painter Littleton looks like this:

Vivax is located in Littleton, so it shows up number one in maps,But what if I just look for the generic term no city or local intent, “house Painter”?  This is where Google try’s to figure out where you are located. And this is important!  Google thinks I am in Thornton Colorado.  Remember I am in Lafayette CO. Thornton is about 7 miles away, and in terms of local services, barely relevant to me. There are several large suburbs and cities closer to me (Boulder is next door, and Broomfield in the other direction).  But Google thinks I am in Thornton and will show Thornton results mixed with just national type results.  Here is what my Firefox shows as my auto detect location:

Here are the results:

As we did the optimization for Vivax and M and E it’s no surprise these guys show up.  But, we didn’t intentionally try and get results in Lafayette.  (remember that’s where I am searching from). These results are more of a hangover from these two exceptionally well promoted sites having great rankings and using the city term Thornton as part of their service areas.

So, the short story for a company trying to promote their site is this.  You need to check all three type search types in mind, and optimize for each. To accomplish this you must optimize both the Places listing and for the organic listings. In today’s local search, in my opinion, organic optimization or site promotion comes first. Look at the Denver search again, organic wins over maps.

But the most complicated issue is what location Google thinks you are searching from. When I try to find local services I am getting results for companies’ two suburbs away. So as a SEO firm, it’s important to complete local optimization based on a wide geographical area.

See… local is easy!  If we can help you with your Local visibility give us a call today. 303 500 3053 ext1

How to Sell SEO Services

How to sell Search Engine Optimization Services.

Mike

Our company provides several sales acceleration services, one of which is business development, as in selling more. So I thought I would give the SEO and Internet Marketing firms that are struggling a little with sales, a few thoughts on what has worked for us, and what works in sales in every thing.

Our company, My One Call, LLC gets about 95% of new clients through referrals from happy clients, and other business influencers in Colorado. In the distant past we did some pay per click and other marketing.  For any of you who have been down that path, you know the challenges associated with selling to an advertising generated lead, those being, they are shopping (that’s how they found you right?)  so you will be competing against mainly price, and they don’t know you or trust you. A well known marketing guru once wrote; “if you think about it, advertising is really an admission of failure”  Or some thing like that. I think the point is if you provide spectacular service you shouldn’t need to advertise, that your happy customers will send you lot’s of business and to an extent that’s true, but you need to remind them that you need that from them.

In sales there are four steps with a prospect.

  1. They don’t know you
  2. They know you
  3. They trust you
  4. They buy from you or refer you to others who will.

Trust is the point you need to get to with all prospects. The best way to get a prospect to the trust category is get a 3rd party endorsement of your service. If someone they trust tells them that you are the cat’s meow, the big dog, and the best ever, you are in great shape.

So selling more means getting more endorsements. I am not talking about a written testimonial for your site (although that’s great!) but the reality is most prospects need more than that.

  • We send out a monthly email to our current and past clients. It has very specific copy written to encourage them to tell other companies about us. Frankly, we bug them all the time for referrals.
  • We also refer business to them at every opportunity.
  • We also try to provide out of the box free services, as an example we hold quarterly networking meetings with business owners to discuss how they can help each other in business.
  • If we hear about or see  something working well in advertising or promotion we investigate it, and pass on the information to our clients who might benefit.
  • We provide a free research service for clients who are approached with new advertising opportunities. We call the references, speak with the sales peoples, and give them an honest opinion if we would do it or not.
  • And we bug them for referrals in very systematic and persistent ways.
  • We play golf with Clients.
  • We try to find new ways to be valuable every day. Not new ways to make money.

The final point for now is you should target influential businesses.  If you spend all your time working with start ups, your span of influence is limited. If you work with businesses who are part of the community, and well respected, your referrals will go through the roof.

I know that many web design firms and Internet Marketing companies are very good at what they do, but selling doesn’t fall into their skill sets. It’s frustrating to see other companies that may provide less service and a lower quality product sell more month after month.

We have a great marketing and business development program for these type companies. Affordable and strategic, they return over $20.00 for every $1.00 invested.  They are the Business Development program, and our sales coaching programs.  If you need to grow your company, and are outside of the Denver Metro area (Hey, you guys don’t need the help) call me for a free sales and marketing assessment. I guarantee you will get at least one new idea that will build your sales fast.  303 500 3053 ext 1  <<<  That’s me… Mike Bayes

Spradley Barr Ford. Fake Google reviews?

Spradley Barr Ford. 4809 South College Avenue, Fort Collins, CO 80525-3724 (888) 451-9540   (970) 206-8511.  Fake Google reviews?  You decide.

I have no idea why fake reviews on Google places bother me so much, but they do. I can understand a company that wants to promote their business, but having black hat Internet services post what appear to be completely fake reviews for the sole purpose of deceiving the public is nefarious in my opinion.

Now, if a company posts an actual review from a real customer under a made up google account, that’s no biggie to me.  I am pointing out what we think are the pure blatant lies that appear in many (and I mean many) Google Places listings.

In fairness to the businesses, I am sending an email before posting what I consider the fake listings, and asking that they stop (if they are involved in paying for reviews).  If it stops in a week or two, you won’t see any information here. Hey, a lot of small business owners make mistakes.  The exception will be larger companies who know better, and specifically Car Dealships, who seem to lead the black hat parade on fake Google reviews.

So with that…. Lets start with Spradley Barr Ford.  I have no relationship with them, and have never set foot in their show room, very much (I suspect) like the reviewers you are about to meet.

Here are there 5 recent reviews:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you continue to go through the reviews for Spradley Ford you will find the same trend over and over. Now there is no way I can positively say these are fake. I’ll let you decide.  I am more than happy to discuss this with any representative from Spradley.
And just as a final quick note. I did a blog like this on another dealership a year or so ago, and was accused by a misguided local SEO, that I was doing so to solicited their business. So to be clear, I will never represent or do any Internet Marketing for any company listed in these alleged fake reviews, unless they can prove that I am wrong, and these are real. In which case, I will remove the blog and make my sincere apoligies.
More to follow.
It should also be noted that the other companies you see under these reviewers accounts may be innocent by standers, as the reviewer may be adding a few local reviews just to look more legitimate?
SEO and Social Media
SEO and Social Media.
We all know that social media has to be taken into account when you are trying to promote your web site and brand. The question is, what social media really makes an impact on your sites ranking?  There are lots of studies about this, but the vast majority really don’t look at it through a local prospective.
Our Social Media Test (Facebook shares)
Social Media Cafe
So a few months ago we decided to try and improve a new clients ranking through using only the one social signal we feel is the most important for SEO, that being, Face Book shares. It should be noted the site did have some back links to the homepage, but there had been no new back links in months.
Share our Facebook comment will ya?
We asked lots of local friends who had face book pages to share a post or two from our client’s facebook page. That resulted in 29 different shares. Not much if you are Coca Cola, but a significant amount for a local company. The results were interesting.
Rankings improved with Facebook Shares!
The rankings went from third page on Google for the major key word , to 9th position first page. Now, the keyword would be considered a mid level competitive keyword, so that type of progress isn’t mind blowing, but it is significant.
SEO + Social Media = The new P.R.
Just another case that demonstrates how SEO is becoming more related to P.R.  than ever. The fact is you don’t need social media to have a well ranked site (I am speaking local sites here), but it sure seems to help. No doubt that will continue and become stronger.
That is also one of the reasons we developed www.metasocialweb.com (as a partner). It allows business owners to help other businesses while they get more followers and shares.
Look for more of this
I predict we will see more and more of these type services in the next year as the SEO and Social Media communities start to realize they are very related, like it or not.
