Google Citation and Links DEnver

Interesting Changes in Citations and Links this year.

Last year, as a matter of practice , when we did on line visibility programs for clients we added directory links to many of the major on line directories, yellow pages, and other local web sites.  We would then track the traffic from each (as part of the analytics) and quality scoring. Part of that was watching the back links report to see when the listing, citation or link was “indexed”.

We do much more than just this process during on line visibility programs, so we have a very rounded profile to drive traffic to a clients site.

The interesting thing is,  most of the local directory and y.p sites are no longer showing up as links, or as indexed, and the traffic to a clients site from these sources is way down

Here is an example.  Hot Frog has traditional been a good citation site and gets a lot of traffic.  But sine January, we have not seen a clients listing appear as a link to there site, and traffic is almost non existent.

This listing has been live for almost three months. No sign of it any where on Google Web Master, SEOmoz reports and any other reports we use.

I could add 10 more examples here.  But the point being, has the search world stopped recognizing this directory listings?  And if so how valuable are they to driving traffic to a site.

Let me know what you have seen.

O’meara Ford Denver. Fake Reviews?

Fake reviews are a big problem in the on line world. It look’s like O’meara Ford in Denver, and possibly several other car dealerships are having a huge amount of what seems to be fake reviews posted on Google Places to help their horrible ratings.  But you be the judge.

Below you will find the “other” reviews posted by individuals who posted great reviews about O’meare ford Denver. They all rate other car dealerships, and some rate the same exact companies that the others did.  Are you kidding?

Here are the actual profile’s and reviews of three individuals who posted great reviews for O’meara.  You decide. If I had more time I would go look at the other 50 or so,  but I am sure the vast majority would look fake as well.

Kathrine:  5 reviews all on Car Dealers in Denver.

The profile above has 5 car dealership reviews?

3 car dealership reviews, and the same hotel casino reviews as the profile above.

Wish I had more time,  but I will follow up with more. My advice is to be very careful when reading O’Meara Ford Denver reviews, or any of the dealships these profiles refer to.

More when I have time…

Do Not Fake Google Reviews

I just got this email:

comments = Google is now using business reviews to
determine
business ranking. People are trashing companies with
reviews, Complaint sites and Blogs.

We can help you defend your company by posting positive
Reviews, Blogs and creating Websites to take over
Search Results and control what people see about your company.

How does posting positive reviews help in your businesses
 Google ranking?

1. Positive reviews increase your business rank by
linking important and relevant websites to your website.
2. A constant stream of positive reviews improves your
online reputation.
3. Positive reviews drive traffic to your business.
4. Positive reviews restore a tarnished reputation
by
pushing down negative reviews and links.
5. Helps protect against competitors or anyone else
from attempting to run your ranking.

This service makes no sense. When you are on their web
site it seems to imply they are going to write fake
reviews for you. People can spot these from miles
away, and by posting fake reviews you muck up the entire
trust people may have in on line reviews.

The best system for on line reviews (and they are important)
is to let your real customers post them. Just send them
an email requesting that they go to your Google Places or
any other on line review site, and tell the world how you
did.

Google Places Citations

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - OCTOBER 14: Director of ...

Google Places Citations

An important piece to getting your local site ranked on Google is the citations for your site in your Google places listing (and some that may not show up in Google Places)

Here are some surprising citations we have seen in Google Places listings, and some that are not surprising but worth the trouble of obtaining.

  • Linked in Company profile
  • BBB membership
  • Craig’s list (classified advertising)
  • Allbusines.com
  • Yelp.com (business listing
  • Servicemagic.com (Customer)
  • Angie’s list ( Business Listing
  • Yellowbot.com
  • Local.yahoo.com
  • www.denverpreferred.us

And, from our work it does appear you will get more citations from your own site if your pages are well indexed in Google. Use Google web master tools (free)  and submit your site map. This of course is good for normal SEO, but appears to help in your Google places ranking as well.

There is some reason to assume that Google has diminished the value of your citations, and Google places optimization in General as it relates to your sites ranking.  My feeling is Google has lost some faith in its Google places ranking system due to the MANY programs it has encountered, and may be taking a bit of a breather, or a step back and figure it it period.

Some of this assumption is based on watching new listings over the last 6 months, and how they do not reflect the same information as listings from 12 or 18 months ago, even though they should.

But the one thing we know is your rankings are impacted by both the Citations your site has and it’s links, and that Google does take your Google places listing into account for your over all rankings for local intent keywords.

Don’t make the mistake of only focusing on Link’s.  A well balanced portfolio of Links, Content, citations, and more content will go a long way.  Do remember,  Getting your site visible is about promoting your site as if Google didn’t exist.  If you are doing anything just because you think Google likes it, it probably will not be a very good long term tactic.

SEO Denver

We see so many web design, and to some extent, social media companies offering SEO (search engine optimization) services in Denver.

In most cases, they are just not going to be very good at it. I am sure there are exceptions, but SEO is a skill set that takes not only experience, but on going study and research.

Several of our clients moved to us after long periods of waiting for their web firm’s SEO to kick in. After reviewing the work they were doing, they would have had to wait forever. Some Web design firms seem to think that by completing the basic search engine friendly work on a site it will some how magically appear on the first page of Google. Most experts agree that around 25% of your SEO success is based on your on site SEO., leaving the vast majority of your rankings to the off site SEO. That’s the stuff most web design firms don’t know how to do.

If you are looking for a good SEO firm, ask them these questions.

Who developed the Google ranking algorithm (Page rank) And who is the patent assigned to?

Answer, Larry Page, co founder of Google. And Stanford university

Ask, how important is a pages PR rank in SEO these days?

Answer: Not very!

Ask them the value of Google web master tools for SEO?

Google web master is a free, and highly important tool for tracking how Google views your web site.

Ask them how they will research Key words to use, and how they will use the keywords to attract more visitors.

If they plan to just dump the keywords into your text, thats bad.

Ask them the difference between Dynamic URL’s and Static URL’s on a site, and which is better for SEO.

Answer: The important part is they can describe the difference, and communicate the use of each.

Ask them what they do to stay on top of Google and other Search Engine changes that could make a difference for your rankings.

You would like to hear how they track all of the changes they make with SEO clients, as well as all the off site SEO practices to establish the value of each, and that they subscribe to several national SEO sites and associations, as well as track changes through the Google blogs.

And ask them if Face book, Word Press, and Blogger.com are follow or no follow links.

Answer, Face book: no follow, Word Press is No Follow, Blogger.com Follow

If they can get through those questions, it’s time to do one more test. Ask them for three sites they have done the Denver SEO on that are currently ranked on the First page, and the keywords. And make sure these are recent!

Search engine optimization is so much more than employing the tactics to make your site popular with search engines.

We view it as an over all promotion strategy. It just makes sense that you would want your business listed and mentioned on as many good sites, and sites that are relevant to your business, as possible.

On site SEO is just the practice of making your site usable, and interesting.

Spend a moment viewing the Google video on our search engine optimization page and you will get the best over view of how Google ranks sites I have ever seen, in a few minutes.
